Right before the design team was about to show the new Mini's clay mockup to the BMW execs, they noticed it didn't have an exhaust tip. In a panic, one of the engineers cut the top off his soda can and stuck it on the back. Ever since then, Mini's have had coke-can exhaust tips.

Best obscure knowledge? Or just obscure?

A Plymouth Superbird was used to determine the then-new emissions standards.

That went well.

When the Mercedes Benz SSK was first created, cars were taxed by their horsepower rating. Well, the way they used to dyno cars back then was by taking the engine outside of the car and testing it.

Mercedes knew this and gave the SSK a clutch engaged supercharger which would only work when inside the vehicle. Because of that, these rennwagens were taxed at a lower rate even though they were the fastest thing of it's day.

Volkswagen's V10 TDi Touareg has a bad tendency to eat it's own gearbox for breakfast under extreme acceleration. This issue arose in '04, when VAG decided that a gearbox used on a V8 Touareg (with 315 ft-lbs of torque) was a good fit for a V10 Touareg (about 220 ft-lbs more torque (!)). Apparenty, on the '06 models, and the subsequent R50 models, the issue was fixed, but the '04 V10's have a reputation for murdering their gearboxes

The Acura zdx was an experiment by the engineers to see how ridiculous a vehicle they could create, and still have it go into production.

Apparently, when GM was designing the 5th-gen Camaro, one survey they ran at a product clinic asked 2,500 participants what they thought the ultimate Camaro up to that point was. According to Scott Settlemire , almost 90% of the men and women participating in the survey picked the 3rd-gen 1985 IROC-Z.

Early 911s used four screws to hold the horn grilles on to the body but it was shortly changed to two. This is one way to tell if it's an earlier model.

In testing the Raptor, Ford kept breaking the shock mounts so they are made out of the same grade steel as the F-350's frame. Also, they quietly doubled the frame thickness over the rear in 2013 because of the shitstorm Jalopnik helped create over the Bent Frame Scandal of 2011.

The rear anti sway bar and mounts for early Citation X-11s were an afterthought and installed by hand.

That AMC might still be around and Renault might have never left the US market if Georges Besse hasn't been assassinated? The Grand Cherokee was only a couple years away from being released, right at the start of the SUV boom. If they'd hung on for a couple of years, they might have turned it around.

1st gen dodge caravans had an option for a 2.5 turbo 4 (150 hp) and a 5 speed. Side note I have done some mean burnouts and reverse doughnuts in one.

How 'bout the "S" in SEMA used to stand Speed on stead pf Specialty. From 1963 to 1970. It was because of increasing fear of Government regulation that it was changed.

This rolling bank vault here actually broke GM's frame crushing machine. They had to bring in the one they used for trucks to determine how strong the frame really was.
